Photoshop Techniques #005: "How to Create an Embossed Object."
This is an electronic version of Photoshop Techniques. You need Adobe's Acrobat software to read this (see Acrobat note below).
You can also get a packet of four printed issues mailed free to you by sending an E-Mail message with your name and address to CraigSwan. (Note: Snail mail address, not e-mail)
ACROBAT NOTE: This file is a PDF file and requires Adobe Acrobat to view this file. (luckily Adobe is bundling Acrobat with Photoshop 3.0 and a free viewer should be available on AOL in early October) You should have a Quadra-level machine with at least 16MB of RAM to use Acrobat reliably.
Following is from the introduction to this issue:
---
In traditional printing, you create an embossing object by making an impression in paper so that the embossed graphic appears raised.
The secret to reproducing an embossed look in Adobe Photoshop is creating highlights and shadows that work together to create the illusion of depth. Where you position these highlights and shadows can control the direction your light seems to be coming from.
This issue also continues to expand on the use of channels and masks in Adobe Photoshop. For an additional technique to "wrap" your background over the embossed shape, refer to Photoshop Techniques #007.
